On the 13th of April 2017, I was asked to be the official photographer for Poole and Parkstone Grammar’s prom. I was elated at the chance to photograph my first professional event with clients being my old school friends at Poole Grammar. I had left Poole Grammar after GCSE’s in 2015 to attend Lytchett Minster School where I could take art and photography A level courses that Grammar did not offer. Leaving, however… was very difficult for me, as I had to leave all of my early teenage friends behind. It means so much to me that I could return to see all of my secondary school friends as a result of leaving the school in pursuit of my photography career.
With Poole and Parkstone Grammar both being single sex schools they have a very close link in holding events together such as the annual summer prom for sixth form students. I was flattered at the invite and jumped at the opportunity to experience my first formal photography job.
The prom took place at The Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth on the 6th of July at 7pm. To set up I had arrived half an hour early, with a chalkboard holding all of my contact details and various decorations that surrounded it. As the front doors opened I was ready to greet the first guests with a photo under the lovely golden hour sunlight.
Everyone had come in their finest wear, from jumpsuits to Asian style cocktail dresses. The guys looked very smart in suits in an array of colours too. Couples came beautifully paired with colour schemes and matching patterns. I tried to capture as many of the special moments as possible in the shining light outside the entrance before people parted with their tickets to get inside.
As the night progressed people made good use of the hotel bar so I made sure to visit the dance floor regularly for good action shots of people getting their groove on. I was delighted to have lots of people come up to ask for a group photo and yes, I did capture the shot of Ben Barlow lifting Ben Sheppard into the toilets…
I thoroughly enjoyed my night as photographer as I was very impressed by the warm atmosphere that I felt walking around. I even received some out of the blue hugs from friends I didn’t know I had. Thanks again to Poole and Parkstone Grammar for hiring me as photographer for the evening. All photos are up on my Facebook page, so go tag yourself in them and share them around!
